Kachasu, also known as lutuku, is an African traditional distilled beverage.It is normally brewed from maize but finger millet and various fruits like banana peels (banana wine) can be used.

The alcohol content of kachasu can vary significantly, depending on the strength of the brew. Studies have found an alcohol content ranging from 20 to 30% up to as high as 70%.
In Zambia, Kachasu is regulated by the Traditional Beer Act, 1930 (Chapter 168) with its latest version commenced on 31 Dec 1996.
Calls to legalize kachasu have been made by various interest groups.It is hard for kachasu drinkers,brewers and sellers to understand why kachasu brewing and selling is illigale in a country were it is legal to sell imported spirit drinks like Jameson,Grants, Blue label and many other foreign whiskeys.
