What repentance happened because of human wickedness?
Shortly before he died in 2013, weapons designer Mikhail Kalashnikov, creator of the AK-47 rifle, wrote a letter of regret to the Russian Orthodox Church.
Kalashnikov expressed remorse and said he had some responsibility in the deaths of millions of people due to fire from the projected weapons. Upon reading the testimony, a church spokesman tried to comfort Kalashnikov and said he was a "true patriot".
Kalashnikov's work for the Soviet Union immortalized him in the name of the most popular firearm on the planet, the AK-47 rifle, used by both regular armies and clandestine armed groups around the world.
The name AK-47 is a combination of the initials of the rifle's name, "Avtomat Kalashnikova", and the year the weapon began production, 1947. The World Bank estimates that of the total of 500 million firearms in world, 100 million are from the Kalashnikov family, and 75 million are AK-47s.
