What rights and freedoms did Egyptian women enjoy?

Egyptian women had a wide range of rights and freedoms While they may have been publicly and socially viewed as inferior to men, Egyptian women enjoyed a great deal of legal and financial independence. They could buy and sell property, serve on juries, make wills and even enter into legal contracts. Egyptian women did not typically work outside the home, but those who did usually received equal pay for doing the same jobs as men. Unlike the women of ancient Greece, who were effectively owned by their husbands, Egyptian women also had the right to divorce and remarry. Egyptian couples were even known to negotiate an ancient prenuptial agreement. These contracts listed all the property and wealth the woman had brought into the marriage and guaranteed that she would be compensated for it in the event of a divorce. Wikipedia information suggest's that,  Women in ancient Egypt  had some special rights other women did not have in other comparable societies. They could own pro...

How important was Education in Ancient Greek?

Education in Ancient Greek For most of Greek history, education was private, except in Sparta. During the Hellenistic period, some city-states established  public schools . Only wealthy families could afford a teacher. Boys learned how to read, write and quote literature. They also learned to sing and play one musical instrument and were trained as athletes for military service. They studied not for a job but to become an effective citizen. Girls also learned to read, write and do simple arithmetic so they could manage the household. They almost never received education after childhood. Boys went to school at the age of seven, or went to the barracks, if they lived in Sparta. The three types of teachings were: grammatistes for arithmetic, kitharistes for music and dancing, and Paedotribae for sports. Boys from wealthy families attending the private school lessons were taken care of by a  paidagogos , a household slave selected for this task who accompanied the boy durin...

Africa's worst leaders in history

Mengistu Haile-Mariam Reading about the history of Ethiopia at the moment, so I will nominate:  Mengistu Haile-Mariam .  Ethiopia is, famously, the only African country never to be colonised. And after a few stop-start issues (including waiting until 1941 to abolish slavery…) Ethiopia was making great strides in terms of social progress and economic growth. Ethiopia is, famously, the only African country never to be colonised. And after a few stop-start issues (including waiting until 1941 to abolish slavery…) Ethiopia was making great strides in terms of social progress and economic growth. Until Haile-Mariam seized control of the country in 1974. Firstly, he started by murdering the deposed leader, because of course he did. Then he instituted the ‘Red Terror’ murdering hundreds of thousands of his countrymen whom he regarded as political dissidents (ie. anyone who was not an ardent communist, but especially the students and intellectual classes). Then he  nationa...

Did the Romans once fill the Colosseum with Water and Staged an Epic Mock Sea Battle?

Romans Once Filled the Colosseum with Water and Staged an Epic Mock Sea Battle Being appointed party planner in ancient Rome for a simulated naval battle, or naumachia, would be a nightmare. Consider the logistics behind staging one of these manic events in a lake, arena, or artificially constructed basin: flooding and then draining the water, organizing all the condemned criminals and prisoners of war, procuring the right weapons, managing the spectators, arranging the boats ( biremes ,  triremes , and even  quinqueremes ), orchestrating the fighting, overseeing security,   importing sea creatures, keeping tabs on brothels, and of course, pleasing the emperor. If you messed up the head honcho’s celebration, he might just throw you into the cess pool and cheer you on as you fend for your life.  Naumachiae are thought to  date back  to the third century BC, and appear to have taken place only four or five times in history. The term itself, which ...
