FEATURED STORY

Diana Ross’ Missed Penalty and the World Cup That Changed America

The Horrors of Christendom

The questionable conduct of Christendom As the Middle Ages progressed, the church's stand against vernacular Bibles hardened. In 1199 Pope Innocent III wrote such a strong letter to the military efforts against the Muslims in the Middle East.  These came to be called "Holy" Crusades, but there was nothing holy about them. The first termed the "people's Crusade" set the tone for what was to come. Before leaving Europe, an unruly army, inflamed by preachers, turned on the Jews in Germany, slaughtering them in one town after another. Why?  Historian Hans Eberhard Mayer says: "The argument that the Jews, as the enemies of christ, deserved to be punished was merely a feeble attempt to conceal the real motive: greed. The Protestant rebellion in the 16th century dislodged Roman Catholicism from power in many European lands. One result was the 30 years war (1618-48) "one of the most terrible wars in European history", according to The Universal Histo...

How are you making a difference in your area?

“Meet Kasoma Noordin, from Kampala in Uganda, who makes high-end bicycles with a difference. Rather than using metal or carbon, he makes his frames from a naturally strong and lightweight material that he grows himself. BAMBOO!”

Mohammed Aziz: Meet a man who has read over 4000 books

How many books have you read? Mohammed Aziz owns his bookstore in Rabat's medina since 1967. He has over 4,000 books some of which he meticulously displays outside everyday. He has read every single book, wether they're in Arabic, French, English or Spanish. 'I'll be here till everyone can read. I've read more than 4,000 books, so I've lived more than 4,000 lives. Everyone should have that chance!'

How does Donald Trump's wealth compare to other world leaders like Barack Obama and presidents from other countries like Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping?

Tr ump claims to be worth $10 billion. Forbes says the real figure is $3.2 billion, which is more believable since 50% of the $10 billion trump claimed was in “brand value,” an assertion for which he provided no backup. According to trump, Putin is the richest man in the world, with more than $1 trillion AND control over spending by the oligarchs who depend on him for their positions. Putin says he makes $140,000/year and lives in an 800 sq. ft. apartment. One Russian critic estimates Putin’s wealth at $70 billion. An American journalist with extensive (and painful) experience in Russia says $200 billion. So even by trump’s own estimate, advantage Vlad. Most estimates think Xi has about $1.2 billion. The reality, of course, is we will never know the true picture for any of these gentlemen. Take the futuristic house shown below, which online pundits claim belongs to Putin: It doesn’t actually exist. It’s an architect’s simulation of what Putin’s house MIGHT look like. Then there’s ...

Has anyone ever become a billionaire by begging?

Meet Curt Degerman For 40 years he spent his days searching through bins of a small Swedish town called Skellefteå. Looking for scrap metal and tin cans. After he died of a heart attack aged 60 it was discovered he had left behind a portfolio of stocks and shares worth at least $1,100,000 in a Swiss bank account and a safety deposit box containing 124 gold bars valued at $375,000. Curt hardly ever spent any money and used to eat leftovers from bins of a fast food restaurant. But everyday he would go to the library to read the daily business newspaper, using what he learnt to help him choose his investments.

India school-leaving exam: The controversy that cost 23 lives

In  2019, at least 23 teenagers in the southern Indian state of Telangana had committed suicide after the announcement of school-leaving exam results. Thousands of Indian young people die by suicide every year, according to the National Crime Record Bureau. In 2015, they made up 6.7% of all suicides, totaling to almost 9,000 deaths. Some experts, parents and officials blame the pressure to succeed in school. Higher education in India is fiercely competitive. And school-leaving exams are crucial for securing a spot in good universities - they are seen as a ticket to a well-paying job and a bright future. Top universities also conduct independent admission tests, but students who perform well in those can still lose their seat if they fail their school-leaving exams. In the days following the announcement of the exam results, shocked students and parents protested, alleging there had been errors in marking and demanded the exams be marked again. As protests intensified, suicide...

Surrogacy around the world

Surrogacy around the world Ukraine, Colombia, Mexico and Russia allow commercial surrogacy, but surrogacy for non-residents has been banned in Cambodia, India, Mexico, Nepal and Thailand In the UK, commercial surrogacy is illegal, so a third party cannot profit from matching people, but it is not illegal for a surrogate to be paid expenses - the number of surrogate births in the UK rose by nearly four times between 2011 and 2020 In the US rules vary from state to state - Pennsylvania, where Shanna St.Clair lives, permits compensated and uncompensated surrogacy agreements, and is considered surrogacy-friendly High-profile feminists such as Gloria Steinem and Julie Bindel argue that surrogacy commodifies a woman's body, and leaves surrogates, who are often from poorer backgrounds, open to exploitation

The school dropout's high-risk journey to become Asia's richest man

The school dropout's high-risk journey to become Asia's richest man On the night of 26 November 2008, Gautam Adani, then the 10th richest man in India, was having dinner at a restaurant in Mumbai's luxury Taj Mahal Hotel when he saw gunmen barging in, firing in all directions and hurling grenades. Ten heavily armed militants, all Pakistani nationals, had arrived by sea that evening, split into groups, hijacked vehicles and attacked targets, including two upscale hotels. The 60-hour siege of the city left 166 dead and soured ties between India and Pakistan. Mr Adani later told  India Today magazine  that hotel staff had quickly corralled the diners in a basement for a couple of hours, and then moved them to a hall on an upper floor even as the bloody mayhem continued outside. There were 100 guests packed into the hall - "some hiding under sofas, others taking evasive positions" - praying for their lives. Mr Adani recounted that he had sat on a sofa, told the trap...
