 If you did not carry out an order in the German Army you would be punished very badly, in some cases executed on the spot. The modern German Army, the Bundeswehr, is one of the only Armies in the world, in which a soldier can deny an order if they believe it is inhumane. This is probably, due to the reputation of the Wehrmacht and their role in carrying out in human and illegal acts during WW2.
