The Danakil Depression is a desert area in the Afar (አፋር), northeastern region of Ethiopia, 585 km from Addis Ababa, north of the Great Rift Valley widely known locally as the 'Dallol depression'.

The area contains sulfur abundantly, sulfur springs and microorganisms, extremophilic microbes- extremely primitive microorganisms (prokaryotic microbes) which are among the most ancient life forms on our planet.

The Danakil Depression is the hottest place on Earth in terms of year-round average temperatures. The Danakil Depression is a place like no other on Earth.
