The Danakil Depression is a desert area in the Afar (አፋር), northeastern region of Ethiopia, 585 km from Addis Ababa, north of the Great Rift Valley widely known locally as the 'Dallol depression'.
The area contains sulfur abundantly, sulfur springs and microorganisms, extremophilic microbes- extremely primitive microorganisms (prokaryotic microbes) which are among the most ancient life forms on our planet.
