 Foot binding began in the Sung dynasty(CE 960–1280) in China .The bandages that were used to bind young girls' feet caused a noticeable foreshortening of the feet.

It began as a tradition of the aristocracy, but by the late Qing era (CE 1644–1912) , it had spread to all social levels.
