On the Island of Yap (Micronesia) villagers had the largest currency in the world.
They were giant donut-shaped stones:
The hole in the middle was used to transport the currency. In some parts, this currency is still used.
The crazy part is that they mined these stones on a neighboring island and then loaded them onto canoes and paddled them back to the main island.
Notes were then chiseled into the stone as a ledger. It gives new meaning to something costing a “ton”.
