Len Taunyane and Jan Mashiani became the first black Africans to compete in the modern Olympic Games in the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. They were members of the South African Tswana tribe who were part of the South African exhibit at the 1904 World's Fair. Both had served as long-distance message runners during the then recent Boer War which ended just two years prior.
