When was the first world map published?

R

Muḥammad al-Idrīsī

In the 12th century, 900 years ago, Muḥammad al-Idrīsī who is regarded as the greatest geographer and cartographer ever, published a world map!

Centuries before digital navigation apps put global maps at our fingertips, people relied on the work and research of scholars and cartographers (mapmakers) to illustrate the world. One of the most famous cartographers to publish early maps of the world was the Muslim geographer, traveler, and scholar al-Idrīsī. His book, "The excursion of one who is eager to traverse the regions of the world," is known as one of the greatest works of medieval geography and cartography ever!

He created the Tabula Rogeriana, which is one of the most advanced medieval maps. Nuzhat al-mushtāq fī ikhtirāq al-āfāq, commonly known in the West as the Tabula Rogeriana, is a description of the world. The Moroccan, Muḥammad al-Idrīsī's work was translated into Latin and studied globally.
